Daily Morning Mantra #13 – Body is your temple

, , , , , , , ,

The body is your temple keep it pure and clean for the soul to reside in

~ BKS Iyengar

Happy New Year!

What are you going to do to feed your life this year?

I started 2012 off by simplifying.  I made some decisions to let go of parts of my life that were holding me back from achieving my goals.  It was a gutsy move but I felt so good and free as soon as I did it.  I felt vitality return and a cold that I had been hanging onto all of a sudden disappeared.  This process reaffirmed to me how important the mind, body, soul connection is.  I renewed a promise to myself to continue to treat my body as a sacred place.

I think it’s time again to do a cleanse. Gotta clean out the temple.  If any of you have experienced an ashram/temple/church you can appreciate the amount of hard work that goes into keeping it squeaky clean. I am always impressed by the cleanliness of the temples in Sri Lanka – while outside the temple is dusty and cluttered with plastic bottles, beetlenut red spit splatters the inside is always a sharp contrast.  We have to do that kind of work on our bodies too! Did you know that the average person holds on to 5-10lbs of toxins?  We’re exposed to toxic substances everyday all day… it goes hand in hand with modern urban life.  I do my best to eat a clean, nutrient dense diet, use natural organic cleaning products, buy organic produce, use chemical free soaps and shampoos but I know I’m still exposed to a large range of environment toxins I can’t do anything about.

Here is one of my favourite morning cleanses… if you don’t have time to take on a juice fast for a week or even revamp your diet try adding in a green juice like this every morning to give your body an instant boost of nutrients that will help support your body’s natural cleansing process.

Feed Life Morning Cleanse Elixir

1 green apple
1 cucumber
1 cup spinach
1/4 of a small lemon
1 small thumb of ginger
1/2 cup filtered water if using vitamix

Place ingredients in the juicer or vitamix and enjoy!  Imagine those delicious phytonutrients feeding your healthy cells!

Stay tuned to join me on my juice cleanse coming up.  I’ll be taking you along on my journey through a Feed Life Cleanse.

Wishing you a vibrant day,

Daily Morning Mantra #12 – See the roses amoungst the thorns

Instead of complaining that the rose bush is full of thorns, be happy the thorn bush has roses.

Every situation can be turned and looked at from another perspective.  If you find yourself being critical or negative try spinning it around to see the positive.

Sometimes I can be stubborn and I know that even though I could easily find the positive in a situation I choose to hold onto the negative and play the victim.  Now that I have recognized that feature in my personality I realize how I’m the only one that is suffering when I do that.  Now when I notice that I’m holding onto a negative perspective  I actively turn that around and try to see the roses amongst the thorns…remember we attract into our life what we dwell on… I’m choosing to dwell on health, happiness and love.  Cancer can’t thrive in a happy positive alkaline body!

Daily Morning Mantra #11 – Love the Life You Live

, , , , , ,

Love the life you live. Live the life you love.

~Bob Marley

You’ve only got this life in this moment… you have the power to create your reality.  Do you completely embrace your life and love the adventure that each challenge brings?  I find it hard sometimes to adjust to new challenges and remember that life isn’t really about the easy times it’s about how we hand the tough times and grow from them.

When I’ve had a tough day I like to treat myself to a mini vacation.  As much as I want to jump on a plane back to Sri Lanka right now I know that I’ve got a lot to get done here.  I create a mini vacation by putting on my favourite reggae music (Bob Marley or Midnight), blending up a special Feed Life treat, flipping through a magazine and maybe doing some playful yoga to unwind.

Here’s one of my favourite Feed Life Cocktails

Mango Sun
1 cup cubed frozen mango
1 frozen banana
1/2 cup hemp seeds
1/4 cup fresh mint
1 small piece fresh ginger (to taste)
1/2 cup coconut milk
1/2 cup water
1/2 ice

Blend everything until smooth

Enjoy in your favourite cocktail glass and play Midnight’s version of Love the Life you Live…

Happy Wednesday!

Daily Morning Mantra #10 – Soul Satisfying Stew

, , , , , ,

Satisfy my soul

~Bob Marley

Sometimes all we need is a little soul food!  For me it’s kabocha squash stew.  This recipe has cured me of many chilly days when all I need is a warm hug of stew…

This recipe is so simple and the flavours balance beautifully.  Not only is this stew good for warming up its combination of ingredients I created specifically to enhance the phytonutrient absorption and utilization.  This is a combination of some of the most potent starve cancer foods: shitake mushrooms, cooked tomatoes, and above all garlic!  The fat from the avocado is a whole food fat so your body knows exactly what to do with it and it will aid in the absorption of lycopene in the cooked tomatoes.   The miso, when added at just before serving, will contribute enzymes and beneficial bacteria.

Kabocha Miso Stew

Serves 6

Serve this stew over a whole grain or a few handfuls of leafy greens.

1 Kabocha squash cubed
2 cups chopped tomatoes
2 cups cooked black soy beans or black beans
1/2 cup shitake mushrooms diced
1 1/2 cups vegetable broth
4 cloves of garlic minced
2 TBS date paste
2 TBS rice wine vinegar
1 tsp chilli powder
1 TBS Miso paste

chopped avocado
 and cilantro

First crush and mince the garlic – leave for 10 minutes while preparing other ingredients.
Place all ingredients except miso into a medium sized pot over medium heat until it comes to a boil.
Lower the heat to low and cook approx. 15 minutes until kabocha squash is tender.
Before serving take 1/4 cup of broth from stew and mix with miso until smooth.  Add back into stew.
Serve into bowls over brown rice, quinoa or leafy greens and top with chopped avocado and cilantro.

Daily Morning Mantra #9 – Vibrate with Health

, , , ,

Don’t seek, don’t search, don’t ask, don’t knock, don’t demand – relax. If you relax, it comes. If you relax, it is there. If you relax, you start vibrating with it.

I think I am noticing a Monday pattern here… last week was all about taking the time to relax when there isn’t time as that is when we need it the most.

As a cancer thriver I sometimes have a hard time sitting with myself.  It’s a bit of a journey to be comfortable in my own skin especially because it has, at times, been the source of my discomfort and pain. We all have our own unique challenges, discomforts and fears around being alone with our own thoughts… if this weren’t the case we’d all be living in the mountains meditating to enlightenment!

We create our own reality from what we choose to resonate with a cellular level within our body.  By relaxing, taking the time to breathe, you can draw on your strengths from within that are always present. Try taking some time today to disengage from the daily stress, relax and look within.  You have everything you need. The more you do it the more you will relax into it and vibrate with health and happiness.

Daily Morning Mantra #8 – Compassion

, , ,

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

~Dalai Lama

It’s so easy this time of year to get caught up in our own list of things to get done. Traffic is nuts and people are rude and we need to be somewhere.  Instead of reacting how about trying a little compassion…The more understanding and calm you become the more you will notice peace in your surroundings.

How about having a little compassion for yourself?  What can you do today to make your life more enjoyable?

Daily Morning Mantra #7 – Feeding Life

, , ,

Good Morning  – It’s a glorious Saturday morning  – step away from the computer/smart phone/ tablet as soon as you are done reading this and take a big delicious gulp of fresh air.  Breathe, stretch out your crinkles and smile.

Yesterday I had a great chat with Liz my fellow nutrition and yogini pal she commented that she loved the name of my business ‘Feed Life’ and it’s something that she’s been challenging herself to think about.

“In what ways am I feeding my life??”

It’s not just through good food that we nourish our lives it’s through our relationships, the thoughts we think, our career, our home, hobbies, movies and music… you get the point.

Ask yourself this … What am I doing to feed my life?  Am I nourishing my soul and participating in life giving activities and relationships?

Since my cancer diagnosis I have become very picky about the movies I watch, the amount of news I expose myself to, the friendships that I participate in.  I’ve also noticed my thoughts more… I want to surround myself with positive life giving energy.

Whenever you come to a crossroads say to yourself “will this feed my life?”  If the answer is no then you might want to reevaluate the time and energy that you give it.  I also use this question to motivate me to do things that I know are good for me but I don’t always make the time to do….

Daily Morning Mantra #6 – You are Powerful Beyond Measure!

, , , , ,

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others

~Marianne Williamson

Good Morning Sunshine!  My challenge to you today is to let your light shine.  Write this quote somewhere and read it and think about it often.

Now as promised here is one of my favourite holiday treats adapted from Whole Foods Market’s Cocoa Oat Truffle recipe.

Cocoa Quinoa Mint Delight

Makes about 20 squares

1 cup quinoa fakes
1 cup chopped pitted dates (soak in small amount of hot water for 5 minutes to soften)
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup almond butter
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp ground cinnamon

Place quinoa flakes in a food processor and process until finely ground. Add remaining ingredients and process until finely ground and sticking together – add water if not sticky enough. Put mixture in a 8×8 pan and press until even.

1 cup cashews (soaked for 4 hours or pour hot water over and soak for 10 min)
3 dates
1/4 cup fresh mint leaves
1/2 cup goji berries

Place chashews, dates, and mint in bender and blend until soft – add a little water at a time to help it blend.  Once smooth and the consistency of icing add in goji berries and blend until the icing becomes speckled with little red dots.

Ice cocoa mixture and place in the freezer until ready to serve.  Delicious!

Daily Morning Mantra #5 – Indominable Will and a new smoothie recipe!

Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.

~Mahatma Ghandi
And green smoothies!
My new favourite recipe totally appropriate for the holidays!
1 cup organic spinach
1/2 cup hempseeds
1 frozen banana
1 date
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp all spice
1 tsp spirulina
1cup nut or seed milk
A great smoothie to enjoy before going to a holiday party.  I like to pre eat before heading out to a Christmas party so as to not get stuck filling up bread  which is usually the only plant-based option. This smoothie is packed full of protein and healthy fats.  I also like to bring a special appetizer along to create a conversation around delicious plant-based recipes – eggs, cream, and cheese do not have to be ingredients in a special Christmas treat.
Tomorrow I’ll share one of my secret recipes with you that is bound to impress your friends and family and ensure that you have something yummy to enjoy at your next holiday party!
Have a wonderful day!

Daily Morning Mantra #4 – Your Future Is Yours To Write

, , ,

The future is completely open, and we are writing it moment to moment.

~ Pema Chodron

It’s easy to let others opinions and ideas infiltrate our thoughts about our future…especially after something as scary as a cancer diagnosis.  After a diagnosis there are lots of choices to consider and lots of people to consult.  It can become challenging to feel in control of our future. In reality we are writing our present moment and are our thoughts and intentions today will shape our future tomorrows.  Take some time today to write out your most positive outcome for the future…take charge and write your own future as it is yours to manifest and create.
